ABSTRACT

In the present study to investigate the regions of compensation mechanisms in dento-maxillofacial system involved for the prevention of anterior open-bite in high-angle skeletal class 1 growing cases, 13 subjects with skeletal and dental open-bite were compared with 12 subjects showing skeletal open-bite but a mean overbite of 2.0 ± 0.37 mm. In cephalometric comparison of two groups in regard with maxillo-facial morphology and dentoalveolar structural characteristics; among the cranial, maxillary, mandibular, maxillo-mandibular, facial height and dental parameters it was only the ANB angle which showed a statistically significant difference between the groups. It was concluded that the compensation for an anterior open-bite couldn't be responded to a certain region, however a larger ANB angle in overbite group could be a sign for this mechanism.
