ABSTRACT

The purpose of this in-vitro study was to determine the effects of using a cyanoacrylate adhesive on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. Two groups were performed for the study. In group 1, teeth were etched with 35%% phosphoric acid, and the brackets were then bonded with cyanoacrylate based adhesive, Smartbond (Gestenco International, Gothenburg, Sweden). In group 2, teeth were etched with 35% phosphoric acid, primed and the brackets were bonded with Transbond XT (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif.). Between the 2 groups, the ARI scores and the bond strengths showed statistically significant difference (P<0.001). The present findings indicated that the use of the cyanoacrylate adhesive to bond orthodontic brackets to the enamel surface created significantly less bond strength than the resin based bonding agents.
