Bisphosphonates

Bisphosphonates are used with the purpose of preventing bone resorption in some metabolic bone diseases. These drugs have been introduced into clinical use about 30 years ago and widely used in nowadays. As Orthodontic some different researches have been made which imply that this medicine that can be used as supplementary agents to prevent the unwanted teeth movements and relapse after expansion. Within the last few years, articles have been published which mention the probable relationship between the long term usage of bisphosphona-te and the formation of osteonecrosis in the jaws. The aim of this review is to inform orthodontist about uses, pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action and probable complication.
